Street Hawk was an action/adventure based tv show in the same vein as its predecessors, "Airwolf" and "Knight Rider."
A Limekiln/Templar Production, made in association with Universal Studios.
It aired on ABC, later than anticipated, in the Spring of 1985.
It ran for just 13 episodes (1x pilot movie and 12x episodes) before being cancelled. It was the brainchild of Bruce Lansbury (brother of actress Angela Lansbury) who, strangely, only shared co-creator credits with Paul Belous and Robert Wolterstoff - two inexperienced rookie Executive Producers/Writers.
Jesse Mach, an ex motorcyle cop is given a top secret government mission to ride "Street Hawk" an all-terrain attack/pursuit motorcycle created to fight urban crime on the streets of Los Angeles by Federal Agent Norman Tuttle, the bikes designer. In between fighting crime as the masked motorcyclist Street Hawk, he has to hold down a day job in Police Public Relations.
Not a lot of information is available to the public domain about the series beyond the sparse IMDB/Wikipedia inserts, and what you will find here and one or two other Street Hawk sites. The exact reasons why the series failed isnīt too clear. You can read what Producer Burton Armus thought here. Perhaps it was just too little too late, when all the other super vehicle shows were suffering in the ratings?
One thing is clear. Street Hawk has never lost its popularity. It aired in over a dozen countries worldwide.
It still has an enthusiastic, if not always active, fan base. The show inspired many people to take to the open roads and enjoy motorbikes. It also featured one of the most memorable electronic soundtrack scores for a television programme by the world reknowned German synth rock outfit, Tangerine Dream. Most of which sadly remains deep and unused in the Universal Studios vaults.
